It is my great honor to be the guest editor for this special edition titled, “Recent updates in treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma: from regional to systemic.”
In the treatment field of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), unlike other cancers, a multidisciplinary approach is very important and is actively being performed to obtain better results. As a result, hepatologists, oncologists, interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, and hepatobiliary surgeons are devotedly participating as one team. Nevertheless, it is very difficult to understand and acquire new knowledge other than in one’s own field because the treatment techniques in each field are rapidly developing. Recently, in addition to chemotherapy which uses cytotoxic agents, systemic therapy has been actively studied and utilized in HCC treatment with the development of tyrosine kinase inhibitors and immune checkpoint inhibitors, threatening the dominance of regional treatments. According to this edition, I hope that our readers would obtain further information about new technical advances in various fields of regional treatment for HCC, as well as recently advanced systemic therapy. I really appreciated all the invited authors and reviewers.
Sincerely,
